Styrofoam Winos

StyrofoamWinos.HighRes.jpeg

Styrofoam Winos are comprised of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and longtime friends Joe Kenkel, Trevor Nikrant, and Lou Turner. Since forming in 2016, the trio has performed frequently in their native Nashville’s DIY scene as well as on the road, most recently opening a string of dates for MJ Lenderman. Their recordings and live set each buzz with the energy of the band’s radically communal approach, rotating vocal and instrumental duties while maintaining a cohesive, indie-alt-country sound.

The group's self-titled debut studio album released in 2021 via Sophomore Lounge is both spacious and intimate, with moments raucously hard and feathery soft — a range that is as unpredictable as it is rare. Born of improvisation and written together, Styrofoam Winos emanates the warmth of collaboration. With no single ego at the helm, the Winos create a shared world through self-aware lyrics, which are occupied by stories, characters, and strange encounters with a styrofoam-and-wine society. The tales are narrated by Turner, Kenkel and Nikrant, as they effortlessly trade vocals from track to track, or even within songs in the vein of Yo La Tengo or Fleetwood Mac. The record is intimate yet transportive – freely exploring sounds and themes within a tightly tethered bond of musicianship and friendship.

In August of 2022, Styrofoam Winos self-released their pandemic project, Styrofoam Winos Play Their Favorite M. Hurley Songs, a fifteen-song tape compilation covering one of their shared musical heroes, outsider folk artist Michael Hurley. Most recently they are featured on MJ Lenderman’s And The Wind (Live and Loose!) album, where they join Lenderman for a cover of “Long Black Veil” to a sold out crowd at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall. They’re currently working on their next full-length record with Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville.

Selected praise for Styrofoam Winos, the debut LP:

“The Styrofoam Winos are the warmest, smartest, and most endearing indie rock democracy since Yo La Tengo.”
— Simon Joyner

“There’s a warm and welcoming thing happening here, but always with an undercurrent of restless curiosity and youthful melancholy... lovely, bittersweet...”
– Aquarium Drunkard

“The trio’s first batch of tunes written collaboratively as a band, Styrofoam Winos abounds with wry lyrical observations and hooks as unusual as they are undeniable. It’s never entirely clear who wrote what or who’s playing which instrument, which seems by design for the band crowned “Best Rock Democracy” in the Nashville Scene’s 2019 Best of Nashville issue. Wide-ranging yet bizarrely cohesive, Styrofoam Winos is musical osmosis at its purest.” – Nashville Scene

Alicia Blue

Alicia Blue.jpeg

Born the daughter of a truck driver and bank teller in the last eastern town of LA County, the arts weren’t a priority in Alicia Blue's working class home. After her parent’s divorce, her uncle handed 12 year old Alicia Bob Dylan’s album Desire. This and Jewel’s Pieces of You were the catalyst for her first poems. By 11th grade, she was introduced to Kerouac’s On the Road. Having never sung or played an instrument, she was focused on poetry and moved West to Los Angeles after graduation.

In 2015, she did her first open mic and wrote her first songs. While busking in LA, one of those songs, “Magma,” was featured by Starbucks in stores worldwide. By 2020, Alicia established herself in the LA music scene as a true songsmith.
In 2021, Alicia went to Nashville. This led to collaborations with John Paul White (The Civil Wars) and Lincoln Parish (Cage The Elephant), creating 2022’s Inner Child Work, produced by Parish. She was named an Artist to Watch by American Songwriter by Jan. 2023, and began to record with producer Dan Knobler (Allison Russell). She caught the attention of producer Butch Walker that year, and wrote with him for the album.

Alicia Blue wrapped 2023 with a meeting that would consecrate her path as a songwriter, where she gave an impromptu performance for Lucinda Williams at a party. Lucinda features on her single, “Tennessee,” (out July 2024), with Alicia opening for her on tour in Feb.
The first single, “John Wayne,” off her new album, “Tags”, hits June 6.

Mair

MAIR.jpg

Mair is the passion fueled love child of Mary Meyer and Aaron Goodrich. Combining 20+ years of accompanying various acts, the two found themselves playing the opry together, yet wanting more. Their taste as listeners differed from the music they were creating as hired guns, so they began developing their own music. On Lake Michigan in Winter '23, they carefully created a vibe around the songs, finding the sound of mair. Supporting Houndmouth in various cities of Fall '23 they gear up for more debut performances & releases in Winter '24 .

Much of Mary's growing up was spent in eastern Kansas and southern Missouri, as part of a large, traditional, homeschooled family. Her first love being cello / piano, frequent moves made finding teachers difficult, so Mary taught herself mandolin and other stringed instruments. At 16, she moved to Nashville, and after a short lived, church affiliated marriage, she turned to music and songwriting as the way forward. Since then, she's played the Opry half a dozen times, and was the first female touring member of Diamond Rio. She now enjoys playing the music she loves and is proud of.

Aaron's upbringing luckily had middle school/county talent shows in rural michigan to instill a fire to live via music...at 19yrs old moved to NYC and never looked back. After 4 years of chasing music in Brooklyn, tours to California made it enticing and spent 4 more years in Los Angeles. By the time a move to Nashville came around, he had already done two European tours with americana music. Once in Nashville he was recording/on the road the next 4 years with Colter Wall, Nikki Lane and performed with Sierra Ferrell, Mason Ramsey, Phosphorescent. Now touring with Houndmouth, he's found a harmonious balance musically and personally.

On stage, songsmith Mary plays electric guitar and sings, joined by Aaron playing drums and keys simultaneously. Production is a joint effort while in the studio.
