Screen Shot 2015-10-31 at 3.26.08 PM Drummer and bandleader Dave Watts founded the funk, jazz, and Afrobeat collective the Motet seventeen years ago in Boulder, Colo. Initially the band was Watts and a rotating lineup, but it’s currently rounded out by Jans Ingber (vocals and percussion), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Joey Porter (keys), Garrett Sayers (bass), Gabe Mervine (trumpet), and Matt Pitts (sax). The Motet tour regularly and have become known for their engaging, high-energy live shows while still finding time to hit the studio. Their most recent release, self-titled LP (stream it below), came out last year, and the Grateful Web maintains it “represents everything that is pure, organic, and blissful about the band’s music.” Of course, the best way to truly experience the Motet (below, performing “The Fountain” for Second Story Garage) is live. See them play Brooklyn Bowl on Friday night with Brooklyn quartet Chromatropic and on Saturday night with Philly funk-and-soul 10-piece Swift Technique.
