While still just in high school, trumpeter, composer and singer Kermit Ruffins helped found the Rebirth Brass Band in the famed Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans. (He’d go on to earn worldwide exposure decades later as a member of the HBO ensemble Tremé.) And while Rebirth mingled traditional brass music with funk and hip-hop, since 1992, the charismatic performer has led his own jazz quintet, the Barbecue Swingers (above, performing “Skokiaan”). The band’s most recent release, I’m So New Orleans (stream it below), came out earlier this year, and you can catch Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers when they bring their musical party to Brooklyn on Saturday, 5/31.
