Stooges Brass Band
Stooges Brass Band
The Stooges Brass Band has earned their rank as one of the elite brass bands in New Orleans. The band consistently provides a welcome blast of true New Orleans spirit engaging audiences with their innovative blend of traditional New Orleans brass sounds, contemporary jazz and hip-hop beats.

Emerging onto the scene in 1996, the Stooges Brass Band has gained notoriety as a full-blown musical party immersing the crowd in a cut-loose vibe that is contemporary yet deeply rooted in the culturally rich musical legacy of New Orleans. The band has shared the stage with: Ozomatli, Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli), Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Shemekia Copeland, Pedrito Martinez Group, Galactic, Brownout, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, Big Sam's Funky Nation, The Funky Meters, and Jessica Simpson, among others.
The band is undeniably one of the hardest working bands out of New Orleans, and their dedication to their craft has made an impact. The Stooges Brass Band victoriously battled for the title of "Red Bull Street Kings: Best Brass Band" (the subject of the documentary Brass Bands of New Orleans: Red Bull Street Kings). Along with this auspicious title, the band won a recording and mentorship session at the Red Bull Studios in California. You can watch the results of this project here: The Red Bull Studio Sessions. The band also received the award for "Best Contemporary Brass Band 2011" at the Big Easy Music Awards.
The Stooges Brass Band continues to tour performing at venues throughout the country and appearing at famed festivals such as New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bonnaroo, South by Southwest, Utah Arts Festival, Discover Jazz, American Folk Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, , Great American Brass Band Festival, and more.

The Stooges Brass Band has also answered the call to serve as cultural ambassadors and were employed by the US Embassy to tour, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Other international appearances include the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, the Durham Brass Festival in the UK and Nuits D’Afrique, Tremblant Blues Festival in Canada.

Whether they're second-lining in the back streets of the Crescent City, or performing their spirited stage show, the Stooges Brass Band delivers an authentic New Orleans celebration.

Plus Special Guest: Natalie Cressman
Raised in an eclectic musical household, Natalie Cressman has only continued to diversify and expand her musical universe. Still in her early 20s, the trombonist/composer/vocalist has assimilated the full range of her sonic influences into a startlingly mature, strikingly original voice that melds the sophistication of modern jazz with captivating storytelling and intoxicating melodies reminiscent of indie rock's most distinctive songwriters.

Cressman has spent much of the last five years touring the jam band circuit with Phish's Trey Anastasio, while also performing with jazz luminaries Nicholas Payton, Wycliffe Gordon, and Peter Apfelbaum. Those varied experiences are reflected on her gorgeous second release, Turn the Sea. Anastasio calls the album "a beacon of light in an increasingly cold and mechanized era of music. Natalie is standing on the precipice of an incredible life in music, and if this album is any indication of where she's headed, then I'll be listening every step of the way."
Innov Gnawa
Innov Gnawa
INNOV GNAWA IS A GRAMMY-NOMINATED MUSICAL COLLECTIVE DEDICATED TO EXPLORING MOROCCO’S VENERABLE GNAWA MUSIC TRADITION IN THE HEART OF NEW YORK CITY. FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 2014 BY MOROCCAN EXPAT SAMIR LANGUS, THE GROUP DRAWS ON THE CONSIDERABLE TALENTS AND EXPERTISE OF HASSAN BEN JAAFER, A MAÂLEM, OR MASTER GNAWA MUSICIAN, ORIGINALLY FROM FEZ, MOROCCO. UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF BEN JAAFER, INNOV HAS DELVED DEEP INTO THE ROOTS AND RITUALS OF GNAWA MUSIC, AND MADE A BIG SPLASH IN NYC, PLAYING SOME OF THE CITY’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS ROOMS INCLUDING LINCOLN CENTER, MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN BOWL AND THE STORIED BACKROOM OF BROOKLYN’S BARBÈS.

FOR THE UNINITIATED, GNAWA MUSIC IS THE RITUAL TRANCE MUSIC OF MOROCCO’S BLACK COMMUNITIES, ORIGINALLY DESCENDED FROM SLAVES AND SOLDIERS ONCE BROUGHT TO MOROCCO FROM NORTHERN MALI AND MAURITANIA. OFTEN CALLED “THE MOROCCAN BLUES”, GNAWA MUSIC HAS A RAW, HYPNOTIC POWER THAT’S FASCINATED OUTSIDERS AS DIVERSE AS WRITER/COMPOSER PAUL BOWLES, JAZZ GIANT RANDY WESTON AND ROCK GOD JIMI HENDRIX. THE MUSIC IS UTTERLY SINGULAR, PLAYED ON AN ARRAY OF UNIQUE INSTRUMENTS — FROM THE LUTE-LIKE SINTIR THAT THE MAÂLEM USES TO CALL THE TUNE, TO THE METAL QARQABA (CASTANETS) WITH WHICH THE KOUYOS (CHORUS) KEEP TIME AND POUND OUT CLATTERING, HYPNOTIC RHYTHMS.

HAILED BY BROOKLYN MAGAZINE AS ONE OF THE "5 BANDS YOU NEED TO KNOW IN BROOKLYN'S ARABIC MUSIC SCENE", INNOV GNAWA MAKE GREAT USE OF THIS TRADITIONAL REPERTOIRE, AND ADD THEIR OWN, CONTEMPORARY SPIN WITH ADDITIONAL AFRICAN AND LATIN PERCUSSION. TAKEN AS A WHOLE, THIS EXCITING NEW OUTFIT WORKS HARD TO FUSE A CENTURIES OLD NORTH AFRICAN TRADITION WITH THE PULSE AND ATTITUDE OF NEW YORK CITY NOW.
