Melanie J-B Charles is A Haitian- American, Brooklyn native, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer, actress and teacher. Melanie attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts (the Fame School) as a flute major. There she discovered her talent for writing, and musical theater. Melanie traveled to Germany and Russia with the Brooklyn youth chorus as a soloist and won a number of international competitions during the tour. Melanie then attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary music where she received her bachelors in vocal jazz performance. During that time, Charles studied with Carla Cook, Miles Griffith, Richard Harper, Billie Harper, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver and Bobby Sanabria. During this time, Melanie also studied Classical Voice with Nkenge Simpson-Hofmann ("3 Mo Divas”/MOTOWN, The Musical) and was a featured soloist with the City Wide Youth Opera directed by Andres Andrade. Since graduation Melanie has done a performance contract withTokyo Disney, has spent time in Paris, where she was featured a number times at Duc De lombards and Sunset Sunside Jazz clubs as well as the feature singer for the Nicola Conte Jazz quartet where she recorded 2 albums along side Gregory Porter and Jose James. Melanie also toured with the quartet at Blue Note Tokyo, Ronnie Scotts and a number of top Jazz venues internationally.
