So, 2010 rocked. We ended the year with December’s LXL, which featured performances by Real Estate and Big Troubles, free salsa from Brooklyn Salsa, art galore by EASTERN DISTRICT, and homemade body products by skinnyskinny. Twas the party of a lifetime. BUT! It is now 2011, and things are about to get even better. We have 8 Local X Local parties comin’ atcha this year. That means EIGHT awesome nights celebrating the best of Brooklyn. So to start it off right, we got Brooklyn’s Bear Hands and Motive in the house.

Local X Local, presented by Brooklyn Brewery, is Brooklyn Bowl’s free monthly show series that celebrates Brooklyn’s best music, food, beer, art, and media. This awesome evening will feature $4 Brooklyn Brewery Lagers, art by She Hit Pause, jewelry by Brooklyn Charm, salsa by Brooklyn Salsa, and an awesome photo booth by bkbooth! Plus, if you know Bear Hands, you know this is just going to be really rad.

Did we mention that it’s FREE? Let’s get local.

BEAR HANDS BIO:

In August 2006, Dylan Rau (vocals/guitar) brought together Ted Feldman (guitar), Val Loper (bass) and TJ Orscher (drums) in a small NYC practice space. The original plan was to flesh out some demos Rau had been working on but each quickly saw and heard the potential for a band; a band that would be unique sounding yet widely accessible. Focusing on the rhythm and percussion that Orscher and Loper bring, they strive to bring the driving beat to the foreground and to marry it with the contemplative lyrics of Rau and inventive guitar lines of Feldman. This musical creativity combines and combats ideas set forth by pioneers of the rock genre.

Press has been off the hook for their debut 4 song ep “Golden” which was produced by Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Pelican) and for their live shows. During their many gigs on the East Coast Bear Hands have been fortunate enough to share the stage with bands such as MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot, Ambulance Ltd, The Honorary Title etc.

It’s almost the end of the year, and we want to end it with a BANG. Or rather… some really psychedelic surf pop. And beer. And salsa. And lots of other cool free stuff. That’s right, it’s time for the final Local X Local of 2010, and we’re psyched to announce Brooklyn’s own REAL ESTATE as our headliner, with an opening set by Big Troubles! Local X Local, presented by Brooklyn Brewery, is Brooklyn Bowl’s free monthly show series that celebrates Brooklyn’s best music, food, beer, art, and media. This awesome evening will feature $4 Brooklyn Brewery Lagers, free snacks from Brooklyn Salsa Company, handmade goodies from skinnyskinny, art by EASTERN DISTRICT, and much, much more! Real Estate were born in the depths of one New Jersey summer. Frontman Martin Courtney had just returned home to his native Ridgewood from college in Washington State, a few fresh songs in his pockets. He’d been playing music with bassist Alex Bleeker and guitarist Matthew Mondanile since high school in various forms, even covering Weezer and the Strokes records from tip to tail. But during the summer of 2008, Real Estate didn’t get nostalgic for just their specific suburban nights, crushes, or favorite bands as teens– they fashioned a tin can-and-string to memories more universal. Their self-titled debut LP is a collection of those first underwater pop songs and onward, 7″ cuts and mpfrees that have been backstroking their way across the Web and into lo-fi nerdpiles. Over the past year, many of these songs have soundtracked a time when it feels like every kid in or just out of college seems to be handcrafting/clamoring for music that shuttles us back to a time before career choices, adult responsibility, and this recession.

Past Local X Local Performers:

Phenomenal Handclap Band, Vivian Girls, Beach Fossils, Crystal Stilts, Maluca, MINKS, The Beets, Midnight Magic, German Measles.

Past Local X Local Sponsors:

Mast Brothers Chocolate, Blue Bottle Coffee, Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, Brooklyn Salsa, Brooklyn Charm, EASTERN DISTRICT, Public School NYC, Peripheral Media Projects, Tortilleria Mexicana los Hermanos, Ad Hoc Art.

Yeah! It’s our 10th birthday! Insound is throwing a raging party TONIGHT to celebrate a decade being a definitive online source for all things indie rock; vinyl, turntables, band merch, digital music (and, of course, CDs). Since launching way back in 1999, we were the first place online to sell records by bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more that made it to the big time. But enough words! Come out and celebrate our 10th birthday with us! We have a line-up of five bands we love and there’s free beer! Thanks for having us around the last 10 years!

Get to the Insound Summer Party at Brooklyn Bowl early on Thursday to compete for free shoes in the Saucony Originals Strike contest! Sign up between 6p-7p and try your hand at landing ten in the pit! Anyone who nails a strike deservedly receives a pair of Saucony Jazz Originals! They’ll be around the whole night with fun giveaways and other opportunities to win free shoes.
