Brooklyn Bowl is continuing its Our World Campaign this month with a Brooklyn-based fund drive that celebrates summer, youth and special opportunities.
Camp Brooklyn works to send kids from the borough to sleep away camps in the tri-state area. Through generous donations, camperships are awarded to deserving children ages 7-16 to attend one of the many outdoor camps in the surrounding metropolitan area. Awarding children from such an urban environment as Brooklyn the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, wildlife, and the starry night sky can change their lives forever. Now in its 8th year, Camp Brooklyn sent 403 children from the borough to great summer camps this summer.
Our World is a place to explore the problems and much-needed solutions facing this planet. Brooklyn Bowl will continue its dedication to sustainability and a green Earth by highlighting worthy causes each month.
In April 2010, a devastating oil spill wrecked the Gulf of Mexico. Just a month later, nearly 200,000 tons worth of crude oil now sit in Gulf waters. As it comes closer and closer to shore, we are reminded of our own waterways here in Brooklyn.
Did you know that the spill in the Gulf is not the first time big oil companies have devastated the ecosystems in which they exploit for oil and profits? Despite the large volume of oil left untended in the Gulf, there’s a body of water even more so contaminated just a few miles from our front door. Newtown Creek in Greenpoint is little known yet has a long history of pollution dating back to the late 19th century. The creek waters are filled with anywhere from 17 to 30 million gallons of oil, and untold amounts of additional pollutants from the factories that line its shore.
While in future months to come we will expand Our World to larger organizations nationwide and internationally, we believe that the dire situation so close to home is in need of some attention.
If you would like to get involved with some of the organizations heading up the fight for clean waterways, you can contact these great organizations and get involved in the neighborhood:
Benefitting the Williamsburg Neighborhood Nursery School
The Williamsburg Neighborhood Nursery School welcomes children of all racial religious and ethnic backgrounds. It was founded on the belief that a good early childhood program should provide children and their families with a bridge between the worlds of home and school. The nursery school environment must be both structured and nurturing; it must combine the safety and comfort of home with the social and intellectual stimulation of school.Young children are explorers. They use all of their senses to investigate their world and the people within it. Classroom materials and programs are designed to encourage and enrich this exploration. Teachers act as guides, extending the children’s thinking, setting reasonable limits for their behavior, and helping them grow as independent learners. The Williamsburg Neighborhood Nursery School is chartered by the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. It is licensed by the New York City Department of Health. The Williamsburg Neighborhood Nursery School is a non-profit educational corporation.
Karaoke Killed the Cat is coming back to Brooklyn for the first time in 5 years, and what a sweet homecoming it will be. Hosted by the frenzied duo of Chris Goldteeth and Lord Easy, Karaoke Killed the Cat brings together all the finest elements of a sweaty dance party and a balls-out sing-along. This isn’t your average bear of a karaoke night, there will be earth shattering dance moves and bikini crowd surfing. You don’t need to be a good singer, just an enthusiastic one. It’s karaoke… stop taking yourself so seriously and let it all hang out.
Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra is a 12-piece explosion of righteousness blending New Orleans party music, Soul in the style of Ray Charles and Al Green, a good helping of Jam-bandy Roots Rock and a splash of upbeat (non-religious) Gospel into a feel-good gumbo of love. Whenever the band takes the stage, it’s Fat Tuesday of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. But BroJo is more than just a band – it’s a complete spectacle – a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Dressed in their finest whites (accented with purple, gold and green) they throw out beads, dance with parasols throughout the crowd and every show starts with a New Orleans-style parade through the audience.

The Honey Brothers like to tell people they formed one dog year ago at ukulele fantasy camp, then took to the streets of New York City, serenading street people and pretzel vendors with their whimsical new-wave folk tunes. This anecdote might tell you something about the spirit in which The Honey Brothers were conceived, way back in 2001 in the wake of 9/11. “The band began as a way to find joy in life,” says Ari Gold, who, with his college friends Andrew Vladeck and DS Posner, formed the group’s original nucleus.
