Reckless Kelly’s roots reach back to Idaho and Oregon, where brothers Willy and Cody Braun paired their state-required education with a musical school of learning taught by their father. New York’s The XYZ Affair has come a long way since lead singer Alex Feder’s high school demos that make up their roots. Originally forming out of New York University’s basketball Pep Band, the band solidified their current four person lineup Feder on vocals and guitar, Chris Bonner on bass and backup vocals, Sam Rockwell on drums and backup vocals, and Russ Maschmeyer on guitar, keyboards, and backup vocals just over two years ago, and has since been mastering the art of writing soaring arena rock colored with the duality of confident energy and boyish vulnerability.

Berlin techno pranksters Modeselektor might be known for reckless and rowdy beats, but they take their go-karting very seriously. Between laps, Sebastian Szary and Gernot Bronsert talk about making their new album, Happy Birthday, ghost riding the whip, and the rise of culture in post-Wall Berlin–all of which sound very important coming from two guys wearing headsocks. -XLR8R

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH
// PIMPS OF JOYTIME //
DJ CONCERNED
ECLECTIC METHOD
Doors 6:00pm :: Show 9:00pm :: 21+
The Pimps of Joytime crosses all the barriers and bridges all the gaps between underground funk, soul, pop, dance, afrobeat and latin, filling every song with soulful harmonies and great vibes. Brian J is the band’s ringmaster. He started The PJT’s in Brooklyn back in 2005, where they cut their teeth in NYC clubs. Mixing samples and dance beats with tasty live musicianship and sweet vocal harmonies, The Pimps of Joytime have evolved into the current five-piece that gets crowds from SF to London on their feet. Putting a modern twist on a retro sound, The PJT’s make dirty, ass-shakin’ grooves like no one else. 2008 was a great year for The Pimps of Joytime-they put out two albums on DJ Nickodemus’ Wonderwheel Recordings, “High Steppin” and “Funk Fixes and Remixes”. 2009 has been even better—The PJT’s have already played over 70 shows from California to North Carolina to Alaska, and somehow found the time to complete their newest album, “Funky Brooklyn” which is coming soon.

Towards the end of 2006, three friends – Dave Okumu (Jade Fox, Matthew Herbert), Tom Herbert (Jade Fox, Polar Bear) and Leo Taylor (Gramme, Zongamin, Matthew Herbert) – started work on what was initially intended as Dave’s solo project. An exciting, beautiful album gradually emerged and during the process of its creation the three Londoners fused into a fully-fledged trio; The Invisible was born.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD
// GORDON VOIDWELL //
MIDNIGHT MAGIC
FREE
Doors 6:00pm :: Show 9:00pm :: 21+
Gordon Voidwell is the alter-ego of a Bronx-born ex-chorister turned rap geek, Will Johnson A multi-instrumentalist, a trained vocalist and a published fashion writer, his music is subversive pop & funk, following in line with Tom Tom Club, Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, and George Clinton. He uses analog synthesizers and chunky drum machines as the backdrop for silky, reverb-drenched vocals – reminiscent of Cameo, New Edition and other championed 80s R&B crooners. Blending old sounds with updated lexicon, Voidwell creates a sonic collage – one that is oh so familiar but at once strange and unusual. This is the point; to embrace the immense void that exists between seemingly opposite ideas of past and future, hip and dorky, pop and indie etc. etc.. That void is the well from which Gordon drinks and he invites you to do the same. “Ivy League Circus” will be released on by Latchkey Recordings as a fully mixed/mastered/produced single available on iTunes. – RCRD LBL
