London Born, NY Bred…..DJ Rekha is many things to many people.....A recognized leader of the community, a reknowned music producer and DJ, radio host, curator, educator and activist who is based in New York City. She is also known for creating and producing the long running monthly night known as “Basement Bhangra™. The New York Times named her " the Ambassador of Bhangra." Newsweek recognized her as “one of the most influential South Asians in the United States.” This past year was highlighted by two invitations to perform and appear at The White House with a special live on camera thanks from President Obama.
Rekha’s musical accomplishments include sound design for the TONY winning Broadway Show, "Bridge and Tunnel." as well as the off-broadway show Rafta Rafta. She served as associate Producer for the NPR Radio Documentary, "A Feet in Two Worlds" and her debut album, "DJ Rekha presents Basement Bhangra,” which featured an array of International South Asian stars as well as well known hip hop artist and activist, Wyclef Jean. In early 2009, Rekha was chosen by the State Department to visit India as a Cultural Ambassador to the U.S. Consulate for a three-week tour of India. More accoldades followed in October, 2009 when DJ Rekha was inducted into the New York City's Peoples Hall of Fame. She also was NYU’s Asian Pacific American Artist in Residence for the 2006-2007 year which is also the same year she taught a class “Pop Culture: South Asians in the US.” Rekha has given lectures and led workshops on Hip Hop, politics and South Asian art for various universities and institutions including the Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum and Columbia University. Her work has been featured on CNN, NPR, PBS. Rekha has curated shows for Summerstage, Celebrate Brooklyn and curated Desi Diaspora film series at the 92Y Tribeca. Rekha is known and respected for her unwaivering National and local support of new emerging talent as well as for the established artists such as Punjabi MC, M.I.A., The Dhol Foundation, Malkit Singh, The New Deal, Red Baraat, Bamboo Shoots, My Pet Dragon, Hardkaur, Lady Sovereign, MR.Vegas, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Outkast, Nina Sky, and a host of others. Her NYC monthly club night “Basement Bhangra” and her festival stints have hosted all of these artists and more.
