Media Recap: Matisyahu

November 30th, 2010

On Monday, November 29, Matisyahu kicked off his annual Festival of Light tour at Brooklyn Bowl, the first of nine total stops that include three back-to-back nights at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Matis blew through a solid two-hour set that included beat-boxing, a disco dreidel, and a sold-out crowd that chanted along in Hebrew.

Hanukkah will never be the same again.

Were you there? Post your pictures of the night to our FLICKR group and your videos to our Vimeo group. Show the world what it’s like to get down at Brooklyn Bowl with the one and only Matisyahu. If you missed it this time around, check out the links below for recaps, photos and videos.

Media Recap: DJ Shadow

November 29th, 2010

What happens when a music LEGEND hits Brooklyn Bowl? Sheer. Madness.

On Tuesday, November 16, DJ Shadow came to Brooklyn Bowl and set the place on fire. On his first tour in over three years, Shadow packed the club with an anxious, sold-out crowd that itched to hear the illustrious DJ scratch his first-ever solo show in Brooklyn. A pioneer of the instrumental hip hop movement, DJ Shadow has long been revered for both his groundbreaking use of samples and his mindblowing live show. This show was no exception. Stationing himself inside his infamous “Shadowsphere” (a giant 3-D sphere), Shadow laid out a huge two hour set filled with hits from all three of his chart-topping albums, in addition to long-awaited new music. As Shadow spun, his Shadowsphere played host to mind-bending visual projections of everything from the streets of San Francisco to a close-up of a bowling ball rolling down a lane (which we found especially appropriate). And every so often, he’d spin the orb around so that the packed room could get a glimpse at the man inside the sphere in action.

Were you there? Post your pictures of the night to our FLICKR group and your videos to our Vimeo group. Show the world what it’s like to get down at Brooklyn Bowl with the one and only DJ Shadow. If you missed it this time around, check out the links below for recaps, photos and videos.

Real Estate were born in the depths of one New Jersey summer. Frontman Martin Courtney had just returned home to his native Ridgewood from college in Washington State, a few fresh songs in his pockets. He’d been playing music with bassist Alex Bleeker and guitarist Matthew Mondanile since high school in various forms, even covering Weezer and the Strokes records from tip to tail. But during the summer of 2008, Real Estate didn’t get nostalgic for just their specific suburban nights, crushes, or favorite bands as teens– they fashioned a tin can-and-string to memories more universal. Their self-titled debut LP is a collection of those first underwater pop songs and onward, 7″ cuts and mpfrees that have been backstroking their way across the Web and into lo-fi nerdpiles. Over the past year, many of these songs have soundtracked a time when it feels like every kid in or just out of college seems to be handcrafting/clamoring for music that shuttles us back to a time before career choices, adult responsibility, and this recession.

Beach Fossils, a band whose reverb-slicked indie pop compares favorably to acts like Surfer Blood, Best Coast and the Drums, formed in 2009 as a vehicle for the solo recordings of Dustin Payseur. Bassist John Pena and guitarist Christopher Burke were brought into Beach Fossils’ lineup later that year, after Payseur had single-handedly put together the recordings that would comprise the group’s first album. Beach Fossils’ debut 7″ single, Daydream/Desert Sand, was released on Captured Tracks in February 2010; their self-titled album was released on the same label later that year.

Minks is the perfect mixture of goth, lo-fi and 80′s revival. Their songs spark up memories of a late night good time on the shore and not just bedroom dance party.

Formed in New York in 2003 by Brad Hargett and J.B. Townshend, the Crystal Stilts were a multi-influenced indie rock band that released its first work — some singles and an EP — in 2004 on the Feathery Tongue label. The first single, “Shattered Shine,” was followed by a series of local shows, and after an EP — all eventually collected in one place on the self-titled full-length 2008 release — added Kyle Forrester on keyboards (for live gigs, anyway) and Andy Adler to take on bass duties. Finally, the group added a drummer — Frankie Rose, formerly of the Vivian Girls– shortly thereafter.
