Five Cult Movies to Fight Off the Doldrums of Winter

Posted on Monday September 14th in

As the British summer finally departs, an urge to hibernate suddenly arrives. And while we slowly retreat to our dens where the whisky is hot, the Internet connection is powerful, and Netflix awaits us with open arms, we can say a hearty goodbye to the outside world.

Because other than pulling on our favourite band T-shirt and going to a gig, our next six months will be ruled by catchphrases from a Netflix original series. When the words eventually lose their magic, we’ll hunt for something else to penetrate our brain with colour and witty one-liners.

But don’t lose hope just yet: We here at the Bowl have compiled a list of the most visually satisfying, dirtiest, and the most hilarious cult films to blow your mind and get you through the winter.

1. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The satirical tribute to science fiction and horror B movies introduced us to the “Sweet Transvestite” from Transsexual, Transylvania, and his warped world filled with dead bodies in freezers, French maids from outer space, and a man with blond hair and a tan that’s close to Adonis. Richard O’Brien’s masterpiece is filled to the brim with quirky musical numbers and one-liners, and the sight of Tim Curry rocking fishnets will leave you shivering with antica … pation.

2. A Clockwork Orange
Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the literary classic can make you question your sanity, watching Alex and his droogs make their way through textured hallways, the cold spaces of Korova Milk Bar, and the distorted labyrinth of the gang’s synching minds. Wait for the sun to set, lock your doors, and give this dystopian masterpiece your undivided attention. We guarantee you’ll be “Singing in the Rain” for days. Just don’t kill anyone.

3. Labyrinth
David Bowie in tights, a really big wig, walking upside down, telling goblins what to do. And the soundtrack — that Bowie-soaked soundtrack. That’s all you need in life.

4. Pulp Fiction
The Hollywood folks gave Tarantino’s masterpiece a thumbs up with seven Oscar nominations, and it’s no surprise. Bursting with eclectic dialogue, ironic humour, violence, and larger-than-life characters, not only did Pulp Fiction shine a new light on Travolta (goodbye, high school and leather) it also gave us Samuel L. Jackson as a badass. Spend the day twisting to surf music, have a burger at a diner, and end your night with Vincent, Jules, and Mia. We dare you, we double dare you!

5. The Big Lebowski
Who knew a film with a high Jeff Bridges floating through a star-lit sky would create a cult, quite literally. Arriving at Brooklyn Bowl London on 25 September, Lebowski Fest turns 13 this year — meaning that a lot of people spent the majority of the Noughties dressing up, bowling, and drinking White Russians with other Lebowski fiends. This year’s fest, back in London for the first time since 2009, will include plenty of bowling, costumes, entertainment, trivia, and other contests followed by a screening of The Big Lebowski, and special guests to be announced.
